Molecular characterization of cucumber mosaic virus isolates infecting ornamental species cultivated in the botanical garden of Bologna university.
2006
During an epidemiological survey carried out in the Botanical Garden at Bologna University, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been detected by applying PAS-ELISA technique infecting some ornamental species exhibiting a severe symptomatology on the leaves. Datura innoxia Miller. showed mosaic and leaf-curling; Globularia nudicaulis L. produced narrowed leaves with a yellow mosaic and/or variegation; Eupatorium cannabinum L. showed a systemic chlorotic and/or yellow mosaic and stunting. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) were employed to characterise these CMV isolates. Total RNA was extracted from symptomatic leaf samples…
Correlates of the non-use of contraception among female university students in Italy
2021
The present paper scrutinizes the correlates of the non-use of contraception among young women in Italy. To this end we consulted two releases of Selfy (Sexual and Emotional LiFe of Youths) survey, which offer information for a nationally sample of university students. The results reveal that the likelihood of non-using contraception is higher among women living in the South and among those with previous experience of unsafe sexual behaviours. The risk of unprotected sex is also higher within a group of students who are relatively older than the others and live in a stable cohabiting union.
Health-Related Quality of Life Issues Experienced by Thoracic and Breast Sarcoma Patients: A Rare and Understudied Group
2021
Thoracic and breast sarcomas constitute a rare subgroup within the sarcoma population. There is limited knowledge about their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and a valid disease-specific HRQoL instrument is lacking. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the HRQoL issues experienced by a small group of thoracic and breast sarcoma patients. Semi-structured interviews with 19 thoracic and four breast sarcoma patients were conducted and thematically analysed. Physical issues mentioned by both groups were fatigue, sleep disturbances, pain, wound infections, and symptoms related to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Tightness in the back and restrictions in performing tasks above arm hei…

Visions and Forms of Democratic Participation in Italian Universities after 1968
2022
The essay focuses on the ideological aspects and organizational dynamics underlying the 1968 protests in Italian universities. It analyses the inter-generational confrontation within the parties and in the wider public sphere in order to explain the new assembly-based organization in the Italian university. Young people in many countries demanded new spaces for a more direct political action; in Italy this would foster a change in the university representatives and parliamentary bodies which had so far mediated student participation. The UNURI (Italian University’s National Representative Union), founded in 1948, would suffer a crisis in 1968 precisely on the thrust of requests from youth i…
PCARE and WASF3 regulate ciliary F-actin assembly that is required for the initiation of photoreceptor outer segment disk formation
2020
Significance The photoreceptor outer segments are primary cilia, modified for phototransduction by incorporation of stacked opsin-loaded membrane disks that are continuously regenerated. This process is disrupted in several types of inherited retinal dystrophy, but the driving force remained unclear. We show that C2orf71/PCARE (photoreceptor cilium actin regulator), associated with inherited retinal dystrophy subtype RP54, efficiently recruits the Arp2/3 complex activator WASF3 to the cilium. This activates an actin dynamics-driven expansion of the ciliary tip, resembling membrane evagination in lamellipodia formation. Colocalization of this actin dynamics module to the base of the outer se…

Requestioning depression in patients with cancer: Contribution of somatic and affective symptoms to Beck's Depression Inventory
2007
Background: Depressive symptoms are a major complaint reported by cancer patients. Somatic and affective symptoms can contribute to depression. Patients and methods: We investigated the prevalence of somatic and affective depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in 213 hospitalized cancer patients prior to the start of chemotherapy. Results: Seventeen of 213 patients (8%) were screened positive for major depression; 40 (19%) had mild to moderate depressive symptoms. The corresponding figures for somatic and affective symptoms were 33.3% and 2.8% in the patients with major depression and 23.0% and 8.0% in those with mild to moderate depressive symptoms. Female patients, p…
Protective and Educational Effects of Physical Activity Practice on Mental Health in Young Age during COVID-19 Lockdown
2022
Background: The restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic have modified the lifestyle of young people, worsening their mental health. Although some countries were allowed to practice outdoor physical activity (PA) in cases of lockdown, the PA level in the general population decreased. The current study aims to assess the differences in fear of COVID-19, anxiety, neuroticism, and general self-efficacy between university students who practiced PA during the second wave of lockdown and those who did not practice any PA. Methods: The sample consisted of 276 university students (176 females, 63.8%; mean age: 22.13, SD: ±3.94) who answered an online questionnaire detecting life habits …
